Crop Establishment

• Crop establishment is the establishment of seeds or seedlings in the field in order to obtain a successful crop with an optimum potential yield.
• Two main methods are practiced in Sri Lanka (extent of crop established with each method is given in Table 1).
  • Broadcasting
    • Direct sowing
    • Seedling broadcasting (Parachute method)
  • Transplanting
• The choice of the method of establishment depends on factors such as,
  • “age” of the variety
  • soil moisture level
  • climatic conditions
  • availability of inputs and labor
