Geographic Information Systems Technology Day

The “World GIS Day – 2024” program, organized by the Natural Resources Management Center of the Department of Agriculture, was held on 20.11.2024 at the National Agricultural Information and Communication Center, Gannoruwa with the participation of officials of the Department of Agriculture, Provincial Agriculture Departments, Hadabima Authority, Mahaweli Authority, Irrigation Department, Agrarian Development Department, Central Environmental Authority, university lecturers and school teachers.

Geographic Information Systems Technology (GIS) is a rapidly developing technology that began in the 1960s and plays a great role in decision-making and forecasting in various fields such as agriculture, environment, transportation, security, and health services. The Natural Resources Management Center of the Department of Agriculture initiated this technology in 1999 and the year 2024 marks its 25th anniversary. It is noteworthy that this year also marks the 25th anniversary of the beginning of the celebration of this day in the world.
