Implementation of Generic ePhyto National System (GeNS) in Sri Lanka
ePhyto is short term for “electronic phytosanitary certificate” which is the electronic version of the information contained in a phytosanitary certificate (ISPM 12).
International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) has realized that paper based phytosanitary certificates (PSC) have many drawbacks. Therefore they have introduced the ePhyto solution to world for advancing and regulating the trade flows by enhancing the safe of plants and plant products throughout the world.
The IPPC ePhyto solution
The IPPC ePhyto solution is a project to facilitate the electronic exchange of phytosanitary certificates between the NPPO of the countries which has been introduced by International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). The project was initially funded from the STDF, augmented with resources from contracting parties and the world bank.
The coorporation of Sri Lanka in ePhyto solution
Sri Lanka is one of three pilot countries testing the GeNS under the global GeNS implementation project initiated by IPPC and made a remark as the first Asian country to “go live with GeNS”.
Sri Lanka has joined the ePhyto since 2016 under the Cabinet Approval of 14.02.2018 Cabinet paper No.18/0146/728/008 on Entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for issuing Electronic Phytosanitary Certificates in Sri Lanka. Already Sri Lanka has started the exchange of ePhytos with New Zealand, USA, Chile and Argentina. The next step will be the exchanging of ePhytos with EU countries in near future.

The project provides much beneficious to several groups and key beneficiaries are NPPO staff and international business communication of plant and plant based product in Sri Lanka.
Advisory & Awareness Servicess
ePhyto solution is a new experience for stakeholders who are engaging and interesting with international plant trade in Sri Lanka. The ePhyto project team is contributing to make aware the public on ePhyto and ePhyto activities through telephonic advisory and awareness service.
