Regional Agriculture Research & Development Centre - Aralaganwila​

The Regional Agriculture Research and Development Centre, Aralaganwila was established in 1982 to serve the research needs for the agricultural development of Mahaweli system B. With the restructuring of the department of agriculture in 1993, this centre was brought under Field Crop Research and Development Institute, Mahailupallama and given the responsibility to work on research and development of field crops.

  • Present mandated areas are Polonnaruwa, Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee, Interprovincial areas of Hasalaka, Mahiyangana & Mahaweli System B, C, D, G
  • This centre is working on research and development activities related to the field crops and regionally important crops like rice, underutilised vegetables and fruits.
  • This station act as the agriculture related training provider for the extension officers, NVQ level and school students in the region.

Services

  • Development of high yielding improved varieties of other field crops, dry zone vegetables and fruits suitable for irrigated and rainfed conditions with pest, disease and drought resistance quality.
  • Development of plant protection strategies to minimize crop losses due to pest and diseases
  • Development of improved agronomic practices to reduce the cost of production and increase the productivity of agricultural lands and crops.
  • Testing the adaptability of new improved varieties and technologies.
  • Developing Improved soil and water conservation methods and soil fertility management practices.
