Ultra-short age rice varieties

Water availability is becoming a particularly important production constraint for rice cultivation in Sri Lanka. The ultra short age varieties which mature around 75-80 days are becoming very important as these varieties can fits well into rainfed ecosystem of dry and intermediate zones during yala season. As well these varieties are suitable for flash flood areas and areas where late planting need to be adopted. 

Services

  • Introduce new 2 ½ months elite rice lines/varieties to farmers
  • Breeder seed production of 2 ½ month released rice varieties to contribute national seed production program
  • Training and field level practical programs on rice breeding and seed production
  • In-plant training of university students, diploma holders and school children
  • Provision of technical information to stake holders

Technologies

  • New red rice variety Bg 252 released for the rainfed rice cultivation
