RRDI DIVISIONS

Plant Pathology Division

Plant pathology division mainly focuses on all aspect of rice disease and their management strategies in order to minimize crop loses.  Therefore, Integrated Disease Management approaches are tested.

In addition to research activities the division accomplishes free disease diagnostic service for farmers. Further awareness programs on rice disease are rendered for students, farmers and officers.

Services

  • Offer disease diagnostic service to farmers and extension officers
  • Development of management packages for identified diseases
  • Farmer fields inspection
  • Develop screening methods for identification of resistance sources and to use in breeding for disease resistance
  • Provide research facilities and industrial training for students
  • Provide cultured pathogens of diseases when requesting
  • Provide diseased plant samples for exhibitions, students and academic institutes by their request
  • Provide training and services to farmers, extension agents, and students to strengthen the human resource development specially for disease management in rice crop
  • Continue our collaboration with international and national institutions for data on distribution of rice diseases and emergence of new diseases essential to develop and/or modify existing methods of diagnosis for effective disease management strategies

Technologies

  • Disease resistant parental materials
  • Management protocol for BLB
  • Management protocol for grain discoloration
  • New fungicides

Research & Publications

Bacterial leaf blight (BLB) caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv oryzae is the most common bacterial disease in Sri Lanka. Since chemical control is still not possible, development of the host resistance is the most economical, effective and environmentally friendly option…
