Ongoing Research

Development of new ultra-short age rice varieties : Ultra short age rice varieties which mature in 75-80 days are becoming important as the erratic whether condition prevailed. These varieties are suitable for rainfed ecosystems as the water availability is major constrain. As well short age varieties could be used in the areas where late planting is adopted and to re-established the crop which damage due to flash flood.

Evaluation of Yield potential of newly bred promising lines (Preliminary Yield Trial/ Major Yield Trial) : Yield potential of new advanced lines would be tested in preliminary and major yield trials with the existing standard varieties. With the optimum management conditions crop yield is quantified to identify best promising lines.

Purity maintenance and multiplication of elite lines : Genetic potential and the stability of newly bred elite lines are evaluated in NCRVT,VAT and LSVAT. The breeder has responsibility to provide pure seed material toa conduct above trials to obtain the precise data.

Breeder seed production of 2 ½ months varieties. (Bg 251(GSR), Bg 252) : Since the breeder seeds production is the initial step of seed paddy production program, providing high quality purified seeds is very important. Therefore breeder seeds are produce according to the SCS accepted standards.

Mutation induction of Bg 250 and Bg 251 : Since the genetic sources for ultra-short age is very limited an attempt was taken to create variation and to select ultra-short age rice varieties with high yield potential. Gamma irradiation was used for mutation induction.
