Rice In Sri Lanka - Crop Establishment

Zero tillage

Objective

  • An extreme level of Minimum tillage, currently not practiced prominently as there is a limitation of broad-spectrum preplant herbicides
  • To reduce the requirement of time, labor and fuel costs required in conventional land preparation
  • To reduce damage to soil structure

Method of operation

  • As the name implies, there will be no Land preparation practiced
  • Pre-emergent herbicides are used to control weeds before sowing
  • Seed paddy that are soaked in water for 48 hours and incubated for 24 hours are broadcasted on to the moistened soil at the onset of rain
  • Seven to ten days after germination, fields will be  inundated  with water and selected herbicides could be used to control weeds

Important considerations

  • Higher rate of seed paddy (150-250kg/ha) is used with this method too
