Parachute Nursery

Nursery

Nursery location

  • Established in parachute trays with dimensions of 56 x 34 x 2 cm (length x width x height).
    • one tray consists of 434 small holes.
    • nearly 760-765 trays are required for 1 ha.
  • On a flat land exposed to sufficient sunlight.
    • Can be established as a dry-bed or a wet-bed nursery.
    • should have accessibility to a water supply.

Construction of the seed bed

  • Holes of the trays are filled up to about ¾ height with clay.
  • Trays are placed as rows of two trays. 
  • If wet-bed method is used, a part of the field is used to place trays.
    • should be about 10cm high and 75cm wide
    • have an appropriate length to accommodate all trays.
    • should be kept for 1-2 days before the trays are placed.

Nursery maintanance

  • Trays are covered with coconut or banana leaves to provide protection from rain and dessication.
    • removed after 2-3 days.
    • water is added if required.

Seed paddy

Requirement

  • About 20-30 kg/ha
  • Assures the advantage of less cost for seed paddy and labor.

Seed Preperation

  • Soaked for 24 hours and incubated for 24 hours.
  • Or dry seeds.

Nursery establishment

  • Pre germinated or dry seeds are placed on holes (2-3 seeds per hole).
  • A thin layer of soil is spread over the seeds.
  • Water is added as required.

 

  • Seedlings are removed from trays after 12 days.
    • Along with the mud balls
    • and thrown over the field evenly.
