01. Sustainable Agriculture Research and Development Centre – Makandura

Sustainable Agriculture Research and Development Centre(SARDC)

Introduction

The Sustainable Agriculture Research and Development Centre (SARDC), Makandura, North Western Province, was established on 6th March 2019 under the Department of Agriculture. Commencing its activities as a Regional Agricultural Research and Development Centre with an initial focus on horticultural crop research and development, the Centre has since expanded its scope to address broader national priorities in sustainable agriculture.

The vision of SARDC is to attain excellence in promoting sustainable agricultural practices, while its mission is to optimize resource-use efficiency, enhance agricultural productivity, and maintain ecological balance to ensure national food security.

Introduction Cont...

In pursuit of these objectives, the Centre undertakes research and development programs directed towards the generation and promotion of ecologically sound, climate-resilient, and commercially viable agricultural technologies. Its research portfolio encompasses diverse disciplines, including soil and plant nutrition, organic farming, soil microbiology, crop production and improvement, plant protection, mushroom cultivation, and tissue culture. The Centre’s efforts are strategically designed to contribute to the transformation of the agricultural sector by ensuring food security, improving the socio-economic well-being of farming communities, and safeguarding ecosystem integrity.

Sri Lanka has achieved self-sufficiency in staple food commodities such as rice, vegetables, field crops, and fruits through the adoption of modern agricultural practices. Sustaining these achievements requires a continued commitment to integrating productivity enhancement with environmental stewardship and social welfare. In this context, SARDC is dedicated to supporting the long-term prosperity of the nation by providing research-based solutions that strengthen resilience, competitiveness, and sustainability within the agricultural sector.
