Introduction

Agriculture Research Station, Rahangala function as a substation of Fruit Research and Development Institute. This Station is the only research station handling research on temperate fruits that are most adaptable to the Up-Country Intermediate Zone and Nuwara Eliya district. This institute was established in 1958, as a collaborative unit with Government farm, Government Seed Potato stores and Research Station. The station was started to function as a separate institute, since June 1978 at the office premises located in Keppetipola Road, Boralanda town. Since 1978 it was administrated under Horticulture Crop Research and Development Institute up to 2019 while conducting research and development activities on temperate fruit crops and up-country vegetables. Starting from 2019 up-to date it is administrated under Fruit Research and Development Institute.

Conduct awareness and training programs for the agricultural extension officers, farmers and agro-entrepreneurs on temperate fruit crop cultivation.
Produce planting materials of DOA recommended fruit crops (citrus crops specially including Jamanaran and temperate fruit crops such as pears and peaches).
Providing resources persons for training programs on fruit cultivation for agricultural extension officers, farmers and agro-entrepreneurs.
Providing solutions to technical problems related to temperate fruit crops and other fruit crops grown in the upcountry intermediate zone.
Organizing agricultural technical exhibitions, field days and providing necessary specimens for the same.
Participation in agricultural research-extension dialogues

Research:

Conducting research to generate new technologies to increase the production, productivity and quality of temperate fruit crops.: Research and development activities mainly on temperate fruit crops including following;

Pears, Mandarin, Strawberry, Pepino, Peach, Apple, Passion fruit

Conducting research for variety development and improvement: Fruit varieties released: Rahangala Pear, Rahangala Green Pear, Rahangala Jamanaran, Rahangala Passion fruit (hybrid), Rahangala Peach 1, Rahangala Peach 2.
Conducting research to minimize post-harvest losses and improve value-added products

Non-research:

Disseminate new technologies which are generated by the institute related to the temperate fruit crops; to farmers, agricultural extension officers, students (schools, agricultural colleges and universities) and private sector agri-entrepreneurs.
Cooperate with public and private sector organizations to establish a strong fruit production sector in Sri Lanka.
Providing agricultural training on fruit cultivation for students pursuing higher education and facilitating, supervising and provide guidance for research activities of university students.
