Field Establishment

Climatic requirements

Winged bean can be grown from sea level up to 2000 m in either maha or yala seasons. As a short day plant it has a critical day length of about 12 hours. However, some improved varieties are not sensitive to photoperiod and produce pods throughout the year. Hence these varieties can be cultivated during both maha and yala seasons.
Winged bean can be grown on soil types ranging from sandy to heavy clays. The crop can be grown on alkaline soils (pH=8), but a well-drained sandy loam, rich in organic matter is preferred.

Seasonality
New improved varieties such as SLS - 44,
UPS - 122, etc., can be cultivated during any season of the year.
